In the film Pretty Woman (1990), Julia Roberts portrays Vivian Ward, a Hollywood Boulevard prostitute who works with older businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) and subsequently falls in love with him. Originally, the production studio instructed costume designer Marilyn Vance, who designed the gown, to make the color black, owing to a possible clash with Roberts’ red hair color. Hughes always began with the music, blasting it all night while he chain-smoked cigarettes and wrote scripts. He was known for his prodigious speed.
